To qualify, the applicant must have a U.S. employer sponsor and a job offer in a profession listed under the NAFTA regulations, such as accounting, engineering, law, pharmacy, science, or teaching. They must also meet specific educational requirements for their profession.

To qualify, the applicant must:

  • Be a Canadian or Mexican citizen.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a discipline related to the field of the job.
  • Have a U.S. employer sponsor.
  • Have a job offer in a qualified profession under the NAFTA regulations.

Canadians may apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry or pre-clearance/pre-flight inspection station. Mexicans must first seek a TN visa at a U.S. consulate or Embassy. The TN visa allows an initial stay of up to three years, and may be renewed as needed, with no limit on the number of possible extensions.
